Increase in demand for Acas’ Conciliation Services
Acas recently published their 2017-2018 annual report which reveals that there has been a sharp increase in the number of notifications Acas have received (from 1,700 to 2,200 per week), since the abolition of Tribunal fees in July 2017.
Individuals wishing to make an Employment Tribunal claim have to first notify Acas. Acas will then try to resolve the dispute without the need for legal action.
The most significant points to note:
- Employment Tribunal (ET) claims increased by 39% (to over 7,000),
- 34% of notifications were resolved before a claim was made to a Tribunal,
- 58% of claims to an ET were settled; and
- 16% of tribunal claims were withdrawn.
Overall, 70% of cases which were notified to Acas avoided an Employment Tribunal hearing
