Julia Carter
Director & Founder 
Julia has over 25 years’ experience advising across a wide range of employment matters, from recruitment through to termination of employment. Julia gained a BSc in Psychology in 1988 from Birmingham University. She then undertook a law conversion course at City University before qualifying as a Barrister in 1991. In 1996 Julia also qualified as a Solicitor. By nature of her role as Company Director (Employment Law in Action is not a regulated law practice) she no longer practises as either a Solicitor or a Barrister, however Julia maintains a Law Society practising certificate.

Julia advises and supports clients on a range of employment issues, negotiates settlement agreements, represents clients at tribunals, and runs training courses and public seminars. Julia is also an accredited Mediator specialising in Workplace Mediation.

Ros Hammond
Director & Founder
After graduating in Business and Finance, Ros began her career in the retail industry working for Whitbread and then Safeway Plc. In 1996 she joined Chartwells, part of Compass Group. During this time, Ros championed the Company through Investors in People, dealt extensively with TUPE and played a key change role when the Company merged with Granada. At this time Ros also completed her Masters in Employment Law. Subsequently Ros moved to SDRC, a Manufacturing Software company, as the UK Human Resources Director. In 2002 Ros became an HR Consultant, providing advice and consultancy support to clients in respect of employment issues.

Ros heads up the HR Consulting team at Employment Law in Action. She continues to play an active role in providing advice and support to clients in respect of employee relations, in developing and delivering training courses for HR teams and senior managers, and in the management and delivery of change programmes and restructuring projects. In addition, Ros is an accredited Mediator of employment disputes. She is also the Chair of the CIPD Chiltern Branch. 

Claire Perry
Claire started her career at city firm Ince & Co conducting litigation and advisory work. She worked there for 5 years until she joined the BBC where she stayed for 14 years. During her career with the BBC, Claire’s roles included Legal Advisor for HR, and latterly, Head of Employment Policy and Freelance Legal Affairs. Her responsibilities included developing standardised policies, documentation and contracts, and advising on strategy and policy development, employee relations and engagement. In addition, Claire represented the BBC’s interests in pan industry fora in the UK and Europe and led the BBC’s response to government consultations on employment matters.

Claire works with Employment Law in Action Ltd as a consultant and provides advice in respect of employment issues to all of our clients across a diverse range of industry sectors. Claire is extremely knowledgeable, offering practical solutions and advice. She is also Director, Legal Content for the online information service Emplaw Online.

Sian Hughes
HR Consultant 
Sian has over 25 years’ experience in HR. She started her career in the catering industry; initially as catering manager at Thames Television, and later moved in to HR and was an HR Director with Sutcliffe Catering and Compass Group, where she had extensive experience of acquisitions and Tupe transfers and regularly represented the company in Employment Tribunals. She has worked as an HR Consultant since 2006 in a wide range of sectors including leisure, logistics, facilities management, manufacturing, healthcare and charities. Sian has an MA in Law and Employment Relations and is a fellow of the CIPD.

Sian is part of the HR Consulting team at Employment Law in Action, advising and supporting our clients on employment issues.

Emma McIver
Office Manager
Emma is an Accredited Mediator and Office Manager for Employment Law in Action. Emma qualified as a counsellor in 2001 with a Postgraduate Diploma before qualifying as a Mediator.

Her responsibilities encompass many aspects of the business, including invoicing and accounts, as well as pulling together documentation for Employment Tribunals, and working on updating HR policies, handbooks and contracts. Her incredible organisational skills keep our team running smoothly.

Emma graduated from UCL with Joint Honours in German and History of Art. She started working a few hours a month for Ros and Julia in 2009 when her youngest child started full time school, and her role in the business has developed as the company has grown. She has had a varied employment history from managing an art gallery to cake tasting, but now she just works for Ros and Julia since they saw her potential and made use of her spelling and grammar obsession!
